The Beatles' legendary Japan tour in June 1966 continues to resonate as a pivotal moment in music history. Now, to commemorate the 55th anniversary of their visit, SGT Label presents the second volume of its collector’s edition series:
“The Beatles in Japan 1966: Archive Collection”, following the acclaimed “Master Collection.”
While the “Master Collection” focused on full, unedited master footage of the two Budokan concerts, this “Archive Collection” compiles every known TV broadcast version, home video release, news report, and documentary, true to its name.
DVD 1 includes for the first time the “Rebuilt Version”—a faithful reconstruction of the 1966 original TV broadcast, complete with commercials and on-screen graphics. Though originally broadcast in color, this version features vintage black-and-white (B&W) footage for authenticity, as most viewers at the time only had B&W TVs. Following that is the 1978 rebroadcast special, aired 12 years later. Rather than the originally broadcast July 1 performance, it featured the never-before-seen June 30 show—including opening acts—making it a historic TV moment. This new version extends beyond previous SGT releases and includes nostalgic commercials and the full program, uncut.
DVD 2 features the 1980 rebroadcast, aired after Paul McCartney's arrest and the canceled Wings Japan tour. It reflects on the Beatles’ legacy while also capturing the disappointment of the canceled tour—an essential historical document. Also included is the 1988 rebroadcast, digitally remastered and aired alongside Elvis and Michael Jackson performances. This version features enhanced footage, side-by-side comparisons, and exclusive interviews with those involved at the time.
DVD 3 presents the 1984 first home video release, now newly digitally converted for the highest possible quality. Among collectors, this version has long been considered the best visually. Also included is the 1993 LaserDisc version, with different on-screen graphics and song titles—both versions fully included for comparison. As a bonus, the color edition of the 1966 “Rebuilt Version” is also featured.
DVD 4 is a treasure trove of TV and news film footage. It includes rare 1966 TV documentaries capturing the chaos surrounding the Beatles’ arrival in Japan, reflecting the social atmosphere of the time. Also included are retrospective documentaries like “The Beatles’ Stormy Five Days in Japan” and “The Beatles’ 103 Hours”, produced for the 40th anniversary.
Spanning over 8.5 hours, this 4-DVD set comprehensively gathers all known TV broadcasts, home video versions, and documentary footage from the Beatles’ only Japan tour. A perfect archival research material and ultimate collector’s edition, fully updated with longer footage and upgraded quality—the definitive 55th anniversary set!
