A definitive collection bringing together demos and studio outtakes that were left unreleased on the official APPETITE FOR DESTRUCTION SUPER DELUXE EDITION box set, including previously unheard recordings, is finally here!
Released in 1987, APPETITE FOR DESTRUCTION is universally acknowledged as one of the most shocking and impactful debut albums in rock history. Long before the album’s release, numerous demos and studio outtakes had circulated since the analog era, and with the arrival of the official SUPER DELUXE EDITION in 2018, which included the core 1986 Sound City Sessions, it seemed that the story was nearly complete.
However, many recordings still slipped through the cracks of that box set. This release gathers together those previously unissued demos, jam sessions, and single-related recordings, including completely unreleased tracks, while also updating and refining long-ambiguous recording data as accurately as possible. The result is a release that stands as a definitive archival reference as well as a must-have listening experience.
Disc 1 opens with five tracks from the 1985 Mystic Sound Session—the very first demos recorded by the original five-member lineup at the dawn of the band’s career. These tracks were previously available only on a hidden cassette included in the ultra-luxury LOCKED N’ LOADED edition, making their inclusion here especially significant.
Tracks 6–18 are studio recordings long known as the LIVE ?!@ LIKE A SUICIDE sessions*, presented here without the crowd noise overdubs. These were recorded in August 1986 at PASHA Music House, the studio of famed Quiet Riot producer Spencer Proffer, who is believed to have produced at least tracks 6 and 7. Sourced from masters leaked by former manager Alan Niven, these recordings appear here in their best sound quality ever.
Disc 2 begins with five tracks from the 1986 Sound City Sessions that were omitted from the SUPER DELUXE EDITION. Taken from audio newly leaked during the box set’s production, these tracks are presented in remarkable sound quality. Of special note is “Cornshucker Stomp” with Duff on lead vocals, which makes its first-ever appearance from this session.
Tracks 6–16 feature writing and demo sessions at West Arkeen’s legendary “Hell House,” dating from September 1986 through early 1987. These sessions already include material that would later appear on USE YOUR ILLUSION, as well as the fan-favorite unreleased track “Crash Diet,” known among collectors as one of the band’s most famous lost songs.
Disc 3 opens with outtakes from GN’R LIES, once again sourced from tapes leaked by former manager Alan Niven. The second half compiles single and promo releases, featuring alternate mixes and alternate versions. When paired with the official SUPER DELUXE EDITION, this collection allows listeners to efficiently and comprehensively explore nearly all demos and studio outtakes spanning APPETITE FOR DESTRUCTION through LIES.
Whether you are a new listener or a hardcore collector, this release is highly recommended as the most complete and accessible archive of Guns N’ Roses’ formative recording years.
